Thursina International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS) held a Health Seminar on "Empowering Students to Increase Physical Activity and Prevent Diabetes Mellitus" on Monday (October 6, 2025).
The agenda, starting from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. WIB (Western Indonesian Time), was attended by the 8th, 10th, and 11th-grade male students in the TICH Room, and the 11th-grade female students in the Harvard Thursina IIBS Hall.
It was part of the institution's efforts to raise students' awareness of the importance of maintaining health and physical fitness within the Islamic boarding school environment.
Ustazah Ns. Catrina Dyan Ekayanti, S.Tr.Kep, the Coordinator of Thursina Medical Clinic (TMC), explained that the event is an annual educational program held to build students' awareness of a healthy lifestyle. "We organize the seminar so that students can focus not only on academics and spiritual aspects, but also on maintaining physical balance," explained Ustazah Catrina.
"With proper understanding, they are expected to be able to adopt a healthy lifestyle and prevent diseases like diabetes early," she continued.
The seminar featured two speakers from the Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University (UNAIR) Surabaya: Dr. Rayi Kurnia Perwitasari, M.Ked.Klin, Sp.A(K) and Dr. Deasy Fiasry, Sp.A. Both speakers explained the importance of regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and regular health check-ups as preventative measures against non-communicable diseases such as diabetes mellitus. They also provided interactive education tailored to the lives of students so that it could be easily implemented in their daily lives at the Islamic boarding school.
In addition to scientific material, the speakers encouraged students to actively participate in discussions and recognize early signs of metabolic disorders. Several easy simulations, such as stretching exercises and tips for maintaining blood sugar levels, were conducted to foster awareness that sustaining health is part of worship. The enthusiasm was evident in the numerous questions and personal experiences shared during the interactive session.
Through the seminar, Thursina IIBS aims to develop a healthy culture among its students. It aligns with the school's commitment to create Islamic boarding schools in a healthy, productive, and highly competitive environment.
"We hope that the students will not only understand health theory, but also become role models for their friends in the Islamic boarding school," concluded Ustazah Catrina. (iz/lil)
