Another proud achievement came from a student at Thursina International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS). Medina Safira, a 12th-grade student, qualified as a fully funded participant in the Schoters Young Leader Exchange ASEAN program Batch 1, an international student exchange program involving three countries: Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.
The program, held on November 8–13, 2025, by Schoters in collaboration with universities in the ASEAN region, focuses on leadership development, understanding regional culture, and strengthening the soft skills of the Indonesian young generation.
During the five-day program, Medina underwent a tight schedule with new experiences. A series of activities, including an ASEAN cultural trip, institutional tours to renowned universities (NUS, UTM, and Taylor's University), discussion sessions and a business pitch challenge with students across the countries, were essential parts of her learning. These activities provided Medina with the opportunity to understand regional issues, build international networks, and advance her communication skills in professional forums.
The student from Semarang showed her emotion and gratitude. She said it was the first time participating in an international exchange program and receiving a fully funded opportunity.
"Honestly, when I first received the announcement, I was really surprised, but I was very grateful and enthusiastic. I was able to visit my dream campuses and meet many friends from various countries. It was nerve-wracking because it was my first time, but that's what made it so rewarding," she said.
The journey to success was not instant. She, who is also the Gold Medal winner at the 2024 World Youth Invention and Innovation Award (WYIIA), prepared rigorously from the initial selection stage. She had to compile documents such as a CV and motivational essay, study ASEAN issues to prepare for interviews, and hone her public speaking and interpersonal communication skills.
"I also read the experiences of alumni of the program to be better prepared. The important thing is to be confident, honest about your motivation, and willing to learn," she explained.
Meanwhile, Medina was accompanied by Chalisah Kanita, a classmate who also successfully applied for the program. However, Chalisah received partial funding of 30% for the program. Medina admitted that she and Chalisah initially applied "just for fun." They wanted to try something new, see NUS firsthand, and meet international students.
"I just thought, 'Just give it a try, and if I pass, Alhamdulillah.' It turned out to be a huge blessing and an experience that truly changed my perspective," said the student, who is active in biotechnology research.
Furthermore, Medina wishes all Thursina IIBS students to dare to pursue wide-open international opportunities.
"In my opinion, don't wait until you feel super ready to apply. The selection process is what really makes us grow. It is important to step out of your comfort zone, because that's where great opportunities often emerge," concluded the student, initiating The Papyrus Project.
Her achievements are proof of determination, courage, and thorough preparation, taking Thursina students to the global world and a brighter future of leadership.
